Watts Happening We've
got a pretty awesome announcement for this issue of the Watts Happening
Newsletter and it all centers around you saving money! Currently
we have in place several discount promotions from our sponsors that are
available to students of the Dirt Wise riding school. These are;
20% off any sprocket purchase from Dirt Tricks Sprockets (Ph. 775 7831750)
20% off any radiator guard purchase from Bullet Proof Designs (Ph. 816 6953784)
A free day of riding on the 60 miles of
golden trails at Brushy Mountain Motorsports Park (Ph. 828 6357766),
located near Taylorsville, NC
Able to purchase from me a set of Fasst Flexx handlebars for $300, with free shipping (normally $330 retail + $20 shipping) The
big announcement is that now you can essentially get your 2-day Dirt
Wise riding school tuition fee of $350 paid for by Fun Mart Cycles, the
largest selling KTM dealer in the USA if not the world. Yep, that's
right you get to come to one of my Dirt Wise offroad riding schools for
free! So how does this work I hear you ask? Well, Tim and the awesome
crew at Fun Mart Cycles in Moline, IL (Ph. 309 7629624) have now really
stepped it up with the support of my Dirt Wise riding school program by
offering the majority of Dirt Wise students a free discount coupon to
the value of $350 which can be used towards the purchase of any new
Honda, KTM, or Yamaha motorcycle. Not only does Fun Mart offer
the best prices anywhere but if necessary they'll deliver the bike to
your door step nationwide generally within 4 days. Plus it's valid for
any new bike purchase, dirt or street. Now that's a bonza deal don't
you think!!!! This offer is available to any student who
has attended a Dirt Wise school since the begining of 2008, except for
the following schools, Georgia (Feb 16/17 & Apr 5/6), Idaho (June
28/29), Oregon (July 3/4 & 5/6), and Kansas (Oct 25/26). This out
of respect for the KTM dealers (KTM World, Motosports KTM, G & G
Cycles, & Letko) that have also help me out immensely with the
organizing of those individual schools. Even if you
haven't attended one of our schools I'm sure that these companies above
will set you up on a great price for their products anyway. Give them a
call and find out! Not only have Fun Mart Cycles lined up
a roaring deal for you guys but they have also loaned me two new bikes
to use for the rest of the year. One obviously will be the bike that I
ride while the other bike will be at the majority of our schools on
hand for anyone to rent for the day. The rental cost per day will be
$125. So if your bike is broken, or if you don't even have a bike, or
if you just want to visit another part of the country and do some
riding and training whilst there then we have now got you covered. Thanks
to Fun Mart's generosity I will now be able to go ahead and sell off my
2007 KTM 250XC to someone would like to buy a totally refurbished
machine. The list of new products on the bike include; *New Maxxis
tires front and rear, *New chain and sprockets, *New seat and plastics
(shrouds, fenders, number plates), *New rear brake lever and gearshift
lever, *New countershaft sprocket seal, *New piston and rings, *New
rear chain guide, *New grips, *New gearbox (transmission) oil. *Clean
airfilter and 3 spare filters already oiled, *New rear brake pads, *New
handlebars (stock) Along with the following products that have 5 hours use (2 dry GNCC races): *Front
chain guide, *Bottom rear shock bearing and seals, *Rear wheel bearings
and seals, *Complete rear brake caliper, * FMF exhaust system (no dings
in the pipe) All this for the price of $3900 if you come and pick it up, or for an extra $300 I have it delivered to your door. Thanks to www.ktmhutt.com for giving us some excellent pricing on all of those KTM parts to get my bike back to A1 condition. While
on the subject of used bike sales, I also have for sale a 2008 KTM
300XC that only has 15 hours of use on it. The bike was actually loaned
to me by my good friend Kenny after he got hurt, so as I could have a
bike there to ride if I needed to while waiting for mine to come out of
the repair shop. I only got to put in two 1 hour sessions on it. It
comes with; *The original tires in new condition (never used) *A set of new Cycra Powerflow Intake race system plastics kit (shrouds, fenders, and number plates) still in the box *Clean airfilter *New gearbox (transmission) oil *New rear brake pads *New original handlebars (never used) *An extra set of new grips The
exhaust pipe (stock) is perfectly straight but has some discoloration
(as normal) and some scuff marks from the carbon pipe guard and hose
clamps (pipe guard is not included). The original plastics have normal
"dulling" scratch marks from the brush. The radiator shrouds are
cracked at the lower mount position. The rear fender has 3 drilled
holes from mounting a tail light. The left footpeg has a slight
bend/dent in it. Other than that the bike is mechanically perfect and
ready to roost on. This steed will leave our barn for a
steal at $5300 if you come and pick it up, or for an extra $300 I have
it delivered to your door. Now for the not so good news of
the month. Doug Masencup, one of the riders from the local crew of "go
fast guys" that I ride with during the winter has unfortunately been
diagnosed with the same cancer that the great Lance Armstrong had, and
is now under going that same nasty chemo as the first stage of his
recovery. Doug is not only a strong rider, but also a strong guy with a
great supporting family, so in conjunction with his friend Russell
Epley, also former SETRA Enduro overall race winner during 2002 just
like Doug, we are conducting a raffle with all of the proceeds going to
offset the huge costs associated with this treatment that he's faced
with. The tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 and will be drawn on June
14. The winner will get free admission (value of $350) at one of our
2-day Dirt Wise riding schools that we conduct across the nation before
June 15 2009. Even though we have yet to release our school schedule up
until that date I can tell you that the list of states we will
definitely be visiting before then is; Northern California, Colorado,
Pennsylvania, Vermont, Idaho, Oregon, Connecticut, Michigan, Minnesota,
Tennessee, New York, Kansas, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Texas,
Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Southern California. If
the winner is a previous Dirt Wise student we will refund their tuition
fee from the school that they attended. The winner may select to have a
different person attend a school if they are unable to make it by the
expiry date. So please go ahead and get a raffle ticket to support the
fight of a lifetime and hopefully you will be the lucky person that we
get to see at an upcoming Dirt Wise riding school. Tickets can be
purchased at our web store by visiting www.shanewatts.com and you can also get more info about Doug there. Does
anybody out there have solid experience with being able load and edit
riding footage from a mini DVD camcorder onto a website. We have got
all of this excellent footage of the Pro GNCC guys cutting laps during
their practice session that we want to put on my website but after
repeated attempts with different software my wife Carrie (the brains of
the operation here!) has been unable to do it. She did the clips that
are already up on our site from a few years ago, but she can't seem to
make it happen again. Any advice/direction on this would certainly be
appreciated. Hopefully we'll get some new footage up soon of Kearney,
Whibley, Mullins, Kanney, Garrahan, Strang, Jarrett, and more out there
shredding it. Check the link below to read my Race Reports from Rounds 4 & 5 of the GNCC series that I recently competed in; http://www.shanewatts.com/resultsnew.aspx This newsletter is made possible by the great support of GPR Stabilzers, Dirt Tricks sprockets, and Fasst Flexx handlebars.

Shane Watts Race Report – GNCC Rd. 5
Fun Mart
Cycles/ktmhutt.com/Maxxis offroad racer Shane Watts provided a
stellar display of offroad riding at Rd. 5 of the GNCC series held in
perfect conditions at the Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, Tennessee venue
over the weekend, April 27.
“I always enjoy heading
to Loretta’s and this year was no different with one of the best
tracks ever , a nice flowing course that really tested skill, speed
and endurance, “ Watts commented following the grueling 3 hour
race. “I got off to a mid pack start but then quickly moved up into
fourth where I could keep an eye on the lead riders. Once Knight had
got out front and disappeared it was time to put the hammer down and
leave the rest of the pack behind so as to catch up to the fellow
foreigner and not make his next victory so easy. Once I bridged that
gap I decided to just tag along for a while and watch seeing as I
hadn’t ridden with Knight for almost a year, since back at the 2007
version of the Loretta’s GNCC. Right at the end of the first lap
though I clipped a tree which pin-balled me straight across into
another tree resulting in quite a violent wipe-out that not only had
me spitting some blood following the race but also wrenched my
already tender neck muscles from the huge crash I’d had a few weeks
earlier, and I banged my head again which left me somewhat dazed.”
“Once I’d recovered
and got going again I was 30 seconds down and back amongst the other
Pro riders. I was heaps annoyed at myself for making such a dumb
mistake so after about mile when I had found my rhythm again it was
time to charge back up to Knight. Midway through that second lap I
had again bridged the 30 second gap and then towards the end of the
lap was able to pressure him into a mistake and subsequently take the
lead. I was riding comfortably and just cruising along in the lead
until the later stages of that third lap when we both had a little
“incident” out on the trail. I went to go around a couple of
lapped riders while he took the same line as them and as the trail
joined up again we both ended up having a collision which left me
laying on the ground. Now, there are two ways I could look at this
incident and I’d like to interpret it as just one of those
unavoidable racing accidents where I was the one that came off second
best. I’m quite certain that there was nothing intentional about it
from Knighter’s aspect, especially seeing as he offered a public
apology when it was mentioned during his podium victory interveiw.”
“This second crash
totally knocked the wind out of my sails. I have scuff marks all over
my body and by then my head was severely throbbing with pain.
Mentally the desire was there to again charge back to the front but
my lack of pre-event training basically meant that there really
wasn’t anything left in the tank to do it with physically. I’m
just disappointed that I used a lot of extra energy in the beginning
of the race as I was really looking forward to running up front for
the majority of the race and finally making Knight have to work extra
hard for his next victory. I showed that I was able to reel him in a
few times with some scintillating speed, and even if for some reason
he wasn’t going at full speed, I was at least able to easily pull
away from the remainder of the hard charging pack of Pro riders. This
resulted in me easily gaining the fastest overall lap time of the day
for a full lap of the course.”
Watts will now put away
his racing boots for a while and focus on his wildly popular Dirt
Wise Offroad riding schools for the next few months. Due to a crammed
schedule of the Dirt Wise schools resulting from the overwhelming
interest, Watts will only be able to possibly attend two more GNCC
races for the remainder of 2008, that being June 22 at Yadkinville,
NC and the series finale on Oct 26 in Indiana. With spectacular style
and scintillating speed Watts will sure be a crowd favorite at these
races as he again tears up the track and tries to lead from the front
of the pack.

Shane Watts race report – GNCC Rd. 4
Fun Mart
Cycles/ktmhutt.com/Maxxis offroad racer Shane Watts turned in a fine
display at Rd. 4 of the GNCC series held in perfect conditions at the
Big Buck venue over the weekend, April 13.
Taking off at the rear of
the pack due to a two kick start Watts was able to methodically work
his way through the Pro class pack to a high position of fourth place
a short way into the third lap of the six lap, 3 hour race. This was
only to last for another lap though as by part way into lap number 4
Watts had began to noticeably tire due to his very limited physical
preparation in the previous few months. The main causes for this were
his full commitment to his wildly popular Dirt Wise riding schools,
personal sickness, and the recent surgery and recovery of their 6
month old child.
Watts soldiered on for the
remainder of the race with his body’s energy levels on “vapours”
to finally finish a dismal 16th
overall.
“With the limited
preparation that I’ve had I’m actually surprised that I lasted
that long before bonking,” Watts exclaimed whilst slumped in a
chair following the race. “It was pretty decent to work my way
through the pack and to ride up near the front again especially
seeing this is my first Pro GNCC race in a very long time. The
previous weekend at my Dirt Wise riding school I had a massive crash
while demonstrating a “Pro level” skill and subsequently suffered
quite a hefty concussion so when I started to get a major head ache
at the beginning of lap 4 I decided it was time to back it down
significantly and just take it easy to the finish. I was extremely
tired by then anyway!”
With two weeks now to
focus on an increased amount of training Watts will be aiming to run
up at the very front of the pack at Rd. 5 of the GNCC, and this time
hopefully for the majority if not all of the 3 hour race.

Watts Happening

Watts Happening and Dirtwise Updates
It's been an extremely busy time since our last Newsletter and time just seems to keep on flying.
Earlier
in the year I managed to get some racing in at the first two rounds of
the National Enduros held in Sumter, SC and Greensboro, GA. Both of
these events were exceptional with great organization, trails, and
conditions. I was just so stoked to be able to go on such long rides
(80 and 60 miles of single track) without having to go over the same
piece of trail twice. No chance of getting bored there. Things were
going great at Sumter as I had the lead after the first of four 18 mile
long sections, but from there it went downhill as I had some major rear
brake problems to the point where I was generating so much heat through
the rear brake that I actually bent the back side of the caliper out
until it was hitting the spokes of the rear wheel. Seeing as the brakes
would get that hot the fluid would continually boil leaving me with
zero brakes until they cooled down and the pedal came back. Later in
the day we swapped to a different brake system which worked okay until
the heat eventually melted through the stock brake line. I was somewhat
lucky to finish up 6th there. Round 2 went a little better
results wise with a 4th but I wasn't as happy with the way I rode as I
just wasn't pushing it much in the very tight trails.
A
couple of weeks later I managed to keep my win streak intact at the
first round of the GNCC series in Florida. Sure now it was only the
morning race that I won instead of the afternoon Pro race, but we'll
just ignore that little piece of information! Actually I was originally
planning on racing the Pro race but at the last moment I realized that
I just wasn't physically prepared to last the distance for a decent
result. If only I was in the shape that I was back in 2002! Check out
this gem that our friend Jeff Spencer was able to locate; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXuBI1VgqBI
No
wonder I used to get such bad arm pump!!! Anyway, in the Pro race I
would have done pretty much what moto legend Travis Pastrana did, which
was to lead for the first couple of laps and then run out of steam and
fade back to a dismal result of 17th overall. The other
reason why I rode the morning race is that I had to be back at home in
NC that night (10 hour drive) so as I could watch the kids and let
Carrie get back to her new business and focus on running that. Plus I
also needed to answer the multitude of email inquiries that we
had received for the Dirt Wise schools.
Following
a few days in the trenches tapping away at the keyboard it was time to
load up again and head to GNCC Rd 2 and this time with the family in
tow. The morning race was on the agenda again for me so we decided to
head down early on Saturday so as we could go hang out at the track and
catch up with friends we hadn't seen for ages. Well it was bitterly
cold at the track and everyone was hibernating so we hightailed it to
the motel and finally got to relax for a few hours from our chaotic
life. The race didn't go any good for me seeing as my 12 month old
clunker of a bike had the water pump gasket let go on the start line. I
only traveled about a mile before it had pumped itself dry and was
about to blow, so back to the trailer we went. After watching the Pro
race start we went and got some tacos, hot dogs, and fries and had
ourselves a trackside picnic as the Pro guys roosted on by, and then it
was off home to get the kids in bed by a decent hour.
During
those next couple of weeks before GNCC Rd. number 3 I was able to get
out and ride quite a bit with all of the guys who are staying in the
area at this time of year. Glenn Kearney and Cole Calkins live in town,
and Jesse Robinson lives just up the road, while the following racers
have also been camped out in the area: Paul Whibley, Josh Strang, Jimmy
Jarrett, Charlie Mullins, and Rodney Smith. Seeing as all of these guys
and their family's are either foreigners or currently living on the
road we decided to have everyone come over for a big feast and
get-together over the Easter weekend.
On
the Wednesday before that next GNCC race our 6 month old boy had to go
in for a scheduled 4 hour long surgery to get himself a little
"tune-up", and thankfully pretty much everything turned out great
following his recovery. The same couldn't be said for me, as on that
same day I had the effects of some serious food poisoning kick in which
resulted in me spending basically the next five days in bed only
getting up to let it fly out both ends. It was not nice and it wasn't a
pleasant way to lose 11 pounds (5 kg). Obviously now I never did make
it to the race even though it was only 45 minutes from our house, and
thanks to my awesome wife Carrie and her mum Chris for pulling double
duty and looking after the both of us sick boys.
Last weekend we conducted our second Dirt Wise school for the year at Highland Park, GA (www.highlandparkresort.com)
which is a top notch riding park that features something like 80 miles
of trails. They have a full range of quality rental bikes and seeing as
they're situated just over an hour away from the Atlanta airport this
is a perfect destination for anyone who wants to fly in and have a
weekend of roosting in a true "back east" environment. Due to all of
the rain things were a little messy for us on the first day but
everyone handled the conditions great especially our oldest student to
date, 71 year old Bruce Johnson. While driving through Atlanta on
Friday I stopped off and visited the Australian Bakery Café in Marietta
(www.australianbakery.com),
to load up on some meat pies, sausage rolls, lamingtons, etc. which is
all traditional Aussie food that you can't normally buy over here in
the US. The other southern brothers (Kearney, Strang, and Whibley) had
all put in orders so I ended up walking out of there down $400 but with
two huge Esky's full of frozen supplies for the troops. And yes they do
taste bloody beautiful!!!
This
shop is run by two Aussie mates and they also stock some of the other
great Aussie delicacies like Vegemite, Cheery Ripes, Butter Menthols,
and the classic Tim Tams. Now Vegemite is an acquired taste which it
seems all American do not like, but trust me when I say that if you
want to win the heart of your lady friend then you need to get her a
pack of Tim Tams(unique chocolate covered biscuit/cracker). These
things have more power to impress than a diamond.
Any way back to business. Below is our finalized Dirt Wise school schedule until the end of July;
April 19-20, 2008 Penhook, VA (near Roanoke, VA)

We
will be taking off all of the month of August and the first half of
September so as to prepare for ISDE in Greece. It's been quite a while
since I've raced at the ISDE and I'm definitely looking forward to
going back to my old stomping grounds in Europe and tearing it up. In
the mean time I'll finally be lining up on the Pro row at this weekends
fourth round of the GNCC series in South Carolina.
Cheers,
Shane Watts

Fun Mart Cycle/Maxxis/ktmhutt.com team rider Shane Watts made the pilgrimage to the country of Honduras to take
victory in Rd. 2 of the Central American Enduro Championship held over the past
weekend.
In dominating fashion Watts was able to distance himself
from the best enduro pilots in Central America
with a convincing victory. The race was held in perfect conditions, and was
situated in the beautiful region known as “The Valley of the
Angels”. Whilst there, Watts also
conducted one of his 2-day Dirt Wise riding schools on the days preceding the
